It’s been a fun-filled couple of days in the fashion industry and we have put together the most interesting of fashion news from around the world just for you. Stay put as we dive into the CFDA’s naming of Zendaya as its Fashion Icon of the year, making her the youngest ever in this category. Plans for one of Nigeria’s most-anticipated shows, Lagos Fashion Week are already in motion.
The global fashion roundup has more than these two big news, however. Stay with us as we unwrap one juicy news after another!
Shh.. Zendaya is now the youngest CFDA’s Fashion Icon of the Year
The Emmy award-winning actress, Zendaya will be given the Fashion Icon award at the upcoming CFDA Fashion Awards. The Council said this award is in recognition of her global impact on fashion. It also notes that her entrepreneurship within the industry is part of what inspired the CFDA to recognise her for this honour.
“Without exception, the ‘Euphoria’ and ‘Dune’ star makes a style statement as soon as she steps out of her car,” the organization said in its announcement. “She has been a supporter of both emerging designers and established fashion houses.”
In 2013, the biracial actress launched Daya by Zendaya; a gender-fluid design offering in a full-size range. The 25-year old will become the youngest recipient of the fashion icon award. Zendaya will join the current list of honourees including Beyoncé, Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Pharrell, Jennifer Lopez and Naomi Campbell.
Zendaya is also the youngest actor to win Emmy for lead actress in a drama for HBO’s “Euphoria” last year. In recent years, the Emmy Award-winning 25-year-old has collaborated with Tommy Hilfiger and is currently a spokesperson for Lancôme, Bulgari, and Valentino.
It’s Black Time! Black Owned Everything Partners with Nike and Nordstrom
Another Emmy award-winning costume designer, Zerina Akers has just launched a collaboration between her company Black-Owned Everything, Nike and Nordstrom to promote the work of 4 Black-owned businesses in fashion and beauty. The collaboration curates the unique style of these brands alongside the season’s newest Nike and Jordan drops.

“When we launched Black Owned Everything back in February of this year, partnerships like Nordstrom x Nike were exactly the type of activations I had in mind to amplify the reach of the Black designers whom I work with and mentor,” said Akers. “This intersection of well-established brands and emerging designers is where the progress of Black Owned Everything’s mission takes place. The inclusion of these selected designers are a big step for their individual career paths and an even bigger step in the right direction for the American marketplace and beyond.”
According to her, the curation is a “fun mix of fashion and lifestyle pieces.” The collection features pieces from Brandon Blackwood, L’Enchanteur, Sammy B and William Okpo. Brandon Blackwood has been working towards normalising Black luxury focusing on trendy but timeless handbags.
On the other hand, L’Enchanteur, which is run by twin sisters Dynasty and Soull is set to “redefine the meaning of heirlooms and timeless pieces. Sammy B creates “limelight-worthy” pieces cementing them as an “It Girl” favourite. Lastly but definitely not least, William Okpo celebrates women who have a cultivated sense of style.
What is cooking inside Lagos Fashion Week 2021?
The Lagos Fashion Week is set to return from October 27th to October 30th at the Federal Palace Hotel. The fashion show, which was put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, is set for a bigger than ever comeback.
With the theme #TheFutureStartsNow, this year’s show speaks to the need for a global fashion industry that preserves and conserves the environment and values people over profit. Though it is a physical event, the 2021 edition will embrace a hybrid model with digital shows highlighting rising talents from across Africa and featuring a distinct exhibition of the selected designers’ collections.
The fashion week will feature a Fashion Business Series on October 27 with key industry stakeholders. Also, as part of its ongoing commitment to facilitating new conversations and exchange of ideas surrounding sustainability in fashion in Nigeria and Africa, Lagos Fashion Week is teaming up with Fru Girls and PopSwap-a new digital community for the Global Fashion Exchange to host an inaugural digitally-enabled Swap Shop experience in Lagos which will take place from the 28th-30th of October.
The fashion show organisers will also facilitate the exchange of pre-owned items through swapping, sharing, donating and resale.
