Would You Replicate Someone Else’s Designs For A Client?

Recently, some controversy arose over designers copying the Alexis by Melodia dress that trended on social media. While some were against the idea of copying designs by other designers, others were for it.

Either way, we know that creating any fashion item and getting it correctly requires a great deal of skill. This week, we asked 5 designers if they would copy another designer’s creation if asked to by a client, here’s what they shared;

What do you think of fashion designers copying design creations from other designers?

I don’t see anything bad in designers copying design creations from another designer as long as it’s not exactly the same. What I mean is as long as there’s a modification in the design, it’s okay. This means the design is created in a new way.

I will because not everyone is capable of getting a design made by a professional and expensive designer but everyone wants to look nice. Who am I to stop them from getting what they want?

I don’t know anything about the law but I don’t think so.

I think it is alright to copy design creations if one is bold enough to credit the authentic owner of the design.

I would because it is what the customer wants.

I don’t think so. I don’t think there’s a law like that.

What do you think of fashion designers copying design creations from other designers?

I value originality, so copying someone’s designs completely doesn’t sit right with me, although there’s really nothing new in fashion. Designs are recycled and blended most time, but, still, you can make the design with a little difference instead of doing an exact copy.

I feel if I  have to make an outfit for a customer It shouldn’t be the same as another person’s designs. But as being original is the right thing to do, we also need to satisfy the customers wants and make money😉. I actually try to advise on a little change or addition to the style to avoid copyright infringement, but some clients just want a replica and they get ideas from popular and expensive brands with they cannot afford and then they come to you.

The Nigerian law is designed to protect original designs but it’s not strong, as anyone can copy another person’s design without giving credit to the original designer and nothing is done to avoid it. So, Nigerian  law does not protect originality.

What do you think of fashion designers copying design creations from other designers?

I think that copying the exact design of another designer shows a lack of creativity. Nothing is totally new anymore and it is okay to draw inspiration from other designs. But, also, you need to ensure that there is a bit of originality in every design.

Most times I advice them on if their body type will suit the style and ask if it is okay to do something similar and not the exact style. I only go ahead to do the exact style of they insist.

Well, it does. As long as the designer goes ahead to patent the ideas and designs. No one can lay claim to something that is not registered as theirs. But one it is registered, every creative has the full backing of the law.

I would say it’s okay, in the sense that there is no design that is original. Most times we see designs and we say, ‘Oh, this is nice’, and we have a picture in our head. Of course, we might edit it to add or remove something.

At the end of the day, we all draw inspiration from each other and fashion really is recycled. We are not inventing anything that hasn’t already been done by other people. So, I’d say its okay, but if you are copying exactly the same thing, it’s weird even though people do it. You can see a foreign or local design from someone and make it into yours, upcoming designers do this a lot.

At fashion school, they even advise us to find someone we like and copy them till we can make our style from theirs. If you copy someone’s design, it is only fair to credit the person.

Yes, I would! It ties up to what I said previously and we can edit it a bit. Some client’s do that because they can’t afford the original designer so they bring it to a more affordable person.

I don’t think there’s any such law protecting fashion designers. Unless maybe you copyright it like how Deola Sagoe went to copyright something in her fashion line. Both here and abroad, I don’t think there’s any law protecting us.

Fashion is generally recycled and most times original design creations are formed from what already exists. Whether a designer will replicate another’s design creations is entirely up to them. One thing we can however agree on is that fashion designers do a great deal of work on every piece they create.
