Clothes are a necessary part of life and living and everyone needs them. Whether for everyday wear or for special occasions, clothes, many times, make all the difference in a person’s appearance.

But, are brand new clothes better than second-hand clothes? We asked 6 Nigerians what they think of thrift clothes, popularly known as second-hand or bend down select’ clothes, and if they will buy them for themselves and as gifts for others, here’s what they said;

1. “I Don’t See Anything Wrong With Buying Thrift Clothes For Myself.” – Nike

What do you think of thrift clothes?

I think thrift clothes are not bad as far as they are nice and neat.

Okay, so would you buy them for yourself or as a gift for someone else?

I buy thrift clothes for myself because I don’t see anything wrong with those that are well used. However, I won’t buy thrift clothes for someone because I don’t want the person to feel bad.

I don’t think I’ll feel so good receiving thrift clothes as a gift from someone.

2. “I Won’t Buy Thrift Clothes For A Freind But I Can Buy For Myself” – Kayode

What do you think of thrift clothes?

Well, as the name implies, they are second-hand clothes and can not be placed over new clothes.

Yeah, they are in two different categories. Would you buy thrift clothes for yourself or as a gift for someone else?

I would not buy a second-hand cloth for a friend as a gift but I can buy it for myself, maybe to play around with or to do some work with.

3. “I Would Buy Thrift Clothes Both For Myself And Others Once They Look Good And Are Clean.” – Kanmi

What do you think of thrift clothes?

I think thrift clothes are quite nice if they look good and are clean.

Hmmm… But would you buy them for yourself or as a gift for someone else?
I would buy thrift clothes both for myself and as a gift for others as far as they fulfil the above criteria. I mean, it’s basically the same thing as buying new clothes.

4. “I Am Comfortable With Thrift Clothes So I Can Buy Them For Myself.” – Collins

What do you think of thrift clothes?

I think they’re good depending on who is buying or who wants to buy them. First of all, they are cheaper and most of the time are of better quality than new clothes depending on the grade you buy.

Most times, I like to get quality things but since my budget cannot cover new quality items, sometimes I buy used quality things. That way, I get the quality I want while still staying within my budget.

I don’t like the idea of buying new things that are sad and of ridiculously low quality.

So true, many times thrift clothes help people save money while still delivering on quality. Would you buy thrift clothes for yourself or as a gift for someone else?

I am comfortable with thrift clothes so I can buy them for myself. As I advance in life, I’ll surely be able to get new things that are of good quality.

As for buying for others, that depends on who I want to give it to and the purpose I’m giving it to them for. I might buy thrift clothes for some people because of the purpose of the clothes, it could be just house wear, and for some people, it might be insulting to them because they can afford better.

Your gift should be based on the person as well as what you are giving it to the person for. However, it is not wise to spend above your budget no matter what it is you are doing.

5. “Yes! I Would Totally Buy Thrift Items For Myself And Others.” – Bolu

What do you think of thrift clothes?

I think thrift clothes are really cool actually, as far as they come in good condition.

That good condition is key. This means you would buy them for yourself or as a gift for someone else, right?

YES! I would totally buy thrift items for myself or as a gift for someone. I have many outfits from Zara, Boohoo, Atmosphere and many other fashion labels that are actually thrift items, and trust me when I say they look amazing!

What do you think of thrift clothes?

Thrift clothes are ok. I feel like some thrift clothes or products are of better quality than brand new products itself. For instance, belts, jeans, etc

That’s true. So, would you buy thrift clothes for yourself or as a gift for someone else?
I can buy for myself but not as a gift for someone else. The reason is that I don’t want them to feel inferior if they discover that it’s thrift and they might not know the value/quality of what I bought for them.

All in all, thrift clothes might be second-hand clothes but Nigerians are very open to purchasing them for themselves as far as they are in good condition.
