In this decade, lots of people, especially women have become extremely particular about the right skincare practices to take care of their skin. So, why then do people consider it weird for guys to indulge in proper skincare practices?
Our column, What Nigerians Think, is designed to get different views and responses from Nigerians regarding certain topics. So, here are different views from Nigerian men regarding the notion that guys should or shouldn’t dabble into skincare.
1. Binjo Adeniran
Binjo Adeniran is a tech marketing, communications and growth consultant. He is also a skincare enthusiast, and here’s what he had to share regarding guys investing time and money in skincare and the misconceptions surrounding it,
“Delving into proper skincare practices for me was a spur of the moment thing, ’cause I woke up one day and decided to deal with my acne-prone and oily skin. My morning routine mainly consists of a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen, while my nightly routine is done with an exfoliant, cleanser, toner/serum and then moisturizer. On a weekly basis though, I use a sheet mask or any kind of mask, while I do at least one facial monthly. My favourite skincare product has to be the Niacinamide because when I introduced it to my routine, it dramatically changed my skin.”
Relatively, Binjo Adeniran invests in skincare products as long as they are what he needs and would help his skin. In closing, here’s what he had to say about people that believe men shouldn’t indulge in skincare,
“😂😂, men need to look fine, please. So, I believe guys should definitely indulge in skincare.”

2. Kolajo Komolafe
Kolajo Komolafe is an engineering student who is mildly interested in skincare, and here’s what he had to say.
“I’m stuck in a war between acne and my face, so, personally, I wouldn’t say I take skincare very seriously. I just pay more attention to skincare than an old-fashioned person would. My basic skincare routine is to wash my face with the Neutrogena oil-free acne wash, dab in my face with a clean towel, then moisturize with a mix of lotion, Vitamin C serum/ascorbic acid, sea buckthorn oil and cleopatra oil. My favourite skincare product has to be the Neutrogena oil-free acne wash, and the most I can spend on any skincare product is 6k.”
Regarding the misconception that guys shouldn’t dabble into skincare, he had this to say,
“There would obviously be people who always think guys shouldn’t invest in skincare. But at the end of the day, it’s your skin, so you should do whatever pleases you. If you feel you need to pay your skin some extra attention to feel a bit more confident, then by all means enjoy yourself.”

3. Wisdom Osa
Wisdom Osa is a skincare junkie who loves everything skincare, and here’s what he had to say,
“Although I struggled with acne for a bit, my attraction to skincare wasn’t much of a hassle because I’m naturally a self-care kinda person in terms of my looks, dress sense etc. My morning routine basically consists of a gentle foamy cleanser, a hydrating hyaluronic acid serum, niacinamide and sunscreen to go. At night, I just cleanse, hydrate, moisturize, then I seal with an occlusive. As regards how much I can spend on skincare at most, skincare in Nigeria can be a problem when it comes to pricing due to currency difference as most products are imported. So, the most I can spend on one product would be $50.”
Wisdom Osa also had this to share regarding whether guys should be deeply involved in skincare or not,
“I understand the fact that women are beauty brands target, so the purging will have to start from them. People have to also realise that skincare isn’t gender-specific, because everyone has a skin and that skin needs to be cared for. It’s high time people unlearn a lot of wrong things about skincare and be encouraged to participate in the aesthetics of it.”

4. Akinfoluyan Abiola
Akinfoluyan Abiola is one whose skin thrives mainly on vibes, here’s what he had to share with us,
“I’m actually not into skincare proper because I’m scared to tamper with my skin texture. I really wouldn’t want to risk using a product that my skin wouldn’t be compatible with. My basic skincare routine is to use a moisturizer. And while I don’t have a favourite skincare product, I can spend my life savings if my skin falls apart.”
Here’s what he had to say about the topic in question as well,
“I honestly can’t blame anyone for having their opinion and overtime, it has been assumed that men are generally less conscious of their skin than women.”

5. Babayemi Jude
Babayemi Jude is a student and graphic designer who doesn’t indulge so much in skincare. Take a look at what he shared with us.
“Well, I actually don’t take skincare seriously because I don’t need to. For the most part, my skin has always been clear. Regarding my basic skincare routine, some times I use a moisturizer, other times, I don’t bother.”
Here’s what Babayemi Jude also had to say about the misconception that guys shouldn’t indulge in skincare,
“Well, I think that’s just bias again, which is like the new norm in the society. If someone doesn’t have a clear skin, I don’t see why the person should be shamed for trying to get it.”
6. Opeoluwa Adetunji
Opeoluwa Adetunji is a photographer and videographer who relatively puts in effort towards skincare. Here’s what he had to share with us,
“I wouldn’t say I’m into skin care like that, and my routine is pretty straightforward. In the mornings, I just use a moisturiser, while at night, I use a toner and coconut oil. I would say 20k is the most I can spend on any skincare product.”
So, should guys really indulge in skincare practices or not? Here’s what Opeoluwa Adetunji had to share,
“The notion that guys shouldn’t indulge in skincare is really wrong. It’s not only women that should take skincare very seriously.”
Obviously, the misconception that guys should probably not be too invested in skincare is a deep-rooted one. However, with fashion influencers such as Enioluwa Adeoluwa, Akin Faminu and many more, who advertise for many skincare brands, it’s a misconception that can be corrected.
We also think that skincare shouldn’t be gender-specific, as all genders should strive to have a healthy skin. Whether by infusing only the basic skincare products such as moisturizers, sunscreens and many more into a daily routine, or advanved ones such as toners, chemical exfoliants and others, guys should definitely consider a healthy skin this new year!
