Fashion has a vast vocabulary that is made up of many English words and some foreign languages in the world today. For this reason, it is very possible to misunderstand or misuse them.
In light of this, Our Fashion Words column is dedicated to commonly misused fashion words and how they should be used properly. It is quite interesting that our fashionistas would be learning what exactly it means to be fashionistas today.
Fashion entrepreneurs, sit back and relax, as there is so much for you to learn too. Dear Fashion lovers, shall we?
Fashionista
A fashionista is a dazzler.
sọLÁ Dọjà- A poet.
A fashionista definitely dazzles. They do not only look good in a lovely and well accessorised little black dress. They do more than looking comfortable in a hoodie, jeans and Nikes. If you have been tagged a fashionista, you should read the next paragraph.
A fashionista isn’t just someone who knows how to combine clothes and stand out. They are fashion-conscious people who always create and promote fashion trends. A fashionista is deliberate and exudes great style.
Many fashion influencers and designers are true fashionistas. They are well versed and immersed in the fashion industry, such that they can create trends that many people will gladly follow.
Chic
Chic is a very misused term in the fashion world. The dictionary defines chic as “clothing that is elegantly and stylishly fashionable”. It is however not uncommon to see any alté outfit being referred to as chic. From baggy clothing to wrap dresses and crop tops, every new trend is “chic”. That is an abuse of the actual meaning of the word.
Also, if chic is used as an adjective to qualify a look or outfit, it must be used to qualify only “elegantly and stylishly fashionable” looks. It is wrong to see a person in their satin bonnet and with a duvet wrapped around them as they curl up on the sofa behind a TV and say they look “chic”
Blazer
Blazers and sport coats are now often used interchangeably. It is now so much of a norm that saying otherwise would make you stick out. However, as a professional, you should understand that it is always right to do and say things right.
A blazer is a nautical-inspired garment and which is navy blue most times. Traditionally, Blazers have patch pockets and gold buttons which could pass for a cool jacket.
Sportcoats usually have a soft silhouette, slanting flap pockets and details like leather buttons and elbow patches, yeah, do you remember calling a sport coat a blazer now?
How These Terms Are Used.
A fashionista is a noun and is used to address a person who makes deliberate efforts to look good and create trends every single time. Of course, a fashionista can follow a trend they did not create but they do so with so much style and grace. A fashionista is also never found wanting, even on their bad days, they still manage to look like they fell out of the cover of a magazine.
Chic, whether used as a noun or adjective, can only refer to elegance and style. Talk of tuxedos and shiny shoes, monochrome dress and sleek hair, tees, sneakers, bracelets and knuckle rings.
Blazer refers to your regular plain jackets with outstanding gold buttons. We believe you have a picture of what it looks like now.
It is very important to know the real meaning of every fashion word as a professional in the fashion industry. Cheers to the words you know and many more you will learn!
