Year in, year out there are new designers graduating from fashion schools and joining the fashion industry with a fresh zeal to take on the world. Fashion is constantly evolving and it takes a vigilant mind to keep up with who is hot and who is not. A few budding western brands have come up recently and havde grown so fast within a short time. We will take a look at two of these brands and see what they are doing right and how they have been able to stand out and gain attention.
Peter Do
The Peter Do brand is one that was launched with an intention to change the status quo for women. Peter Do after having graduated from Fashion institute of technology won the LVMH prize and work with Pheobe Phile at Celine. He eventually launched label which is named after him, with his 2019 spring collection.
The brand has so far been seen to create feminine pieces with a dose of masculinity. Peter Do is using his work to speak against the patriarchal idea of how women ought to dress and given women the freedom to choose and dress as they will. he is also very focused on tailoring since that was his area of specialization at FIT and all his pieces are done with a level of surgical precision.
Peter Do constantly flouts Industry convention like presenting outside New York where he lives, sticking to men’s wear schedule even though he is making women’s wear and avoiding the runway. Despite frequently challenging the norm, the industry has come to accept him. He might not be an influence on other designers so soon, but with strong and relevant message and creative skills, he definitely will make an impact.
Margaret Burton
Experience and passion is what has helped Margaret Burton make a difference in the fashion industry. Hers is a brand born out of proactivity. It all started when she was working as an intern in the fashion industry and her job was to majorly cut rejected wears in half. This was to avoid homeless people from picking the high end clothes from the trash and wearing them.
This inspired her to go into sustainable fashion. For Margaret, sustainability involves repurposing clothes as she believes the market is already saturated with new brands and products. She started to think of ways she could work with what was already available to her to create wears. This influenced her thesis as it involved looking for a zero waste approach to fashion.
The Pratt Institute graduate she is not only interested in making people look good but also to help them live good by avoiding waste. The humanistic approach to her fashion makes it quite commendable and looked-forward-to.
Margaret Burton takes old clothes from people and recycles them into beautiful wears, rather than source for fabrics like every other designer. She is on a journey to reducing the amount of clothes that end up in the landfills every year. In reviving old clothes, she helps keep memories alive for her clients and that’s a really catchy one for her. Her scrap sometimes comes from highly reverenced people like Lebron James; and you can guess that his fans would definitely struggle to purchase that piece.
Her approach to reusing clothes is very innovative. She also believes that teaching is a medium to communicate this sustainability to the coming generations and letting them know the truth of how we live, and what can be done.
Looking at both brands, it is apparent that creating your own path is a great way to build a lasting brand. It is also easier to get noticed as a brand when you don’t sound and look like everybody else. Carving a niche is important, and solving a problem while at it might just give you the edge you need.Like 0
