Desmond Elliot Receives Backlash After Focusing On The Role Of Social Media In The #ENDSARS Protests
Desmond Elliot, the popular Nigerian actor who now represents Surulere in the Lagos State House of Assembly, was recently criticised over his social media regulation speech. According to him,
“Social media is good but it has its negative impacts. Children cursing, people having the effrontery to enter an Oba’s palace and hold the staff of office? Culture is gone.”
Desmond Elliot and the other Lagos HoA members who spoke very strongly against social media are playing out a script written by the FG to regulate social media.

Many people on social media platforms, especially Twitter expressed their displeasure over his speech, saying he was worried about the wrong things. According to a Twitter user, “people are dying and Desmond Elliot is concerned about our culture and respect for elders”.

Instagram Apologises For Flagging #ENDSARS Related Posts As False Information
In support of the #ENDSARS protests started by Nigerian youths about 2 week ago, many people took to other social media platforms, asides Twitter to lend their voices. However, on Instagram, most of these posts were flagged as ‘False Information’ by the servers.
A lot of people expressed their anger as to why a sensitive topic like that would be flagged as false information.
Yesterday our systems were incorrectly flagging content in support of #EndSARS, and marking posts as false. We are deeply sorry for this. The issue has now been resolved, and we apologize for letting our community down in such a time of need. — Instagram Comms (@InstagramComms) October 22, 2020
After a while, the American social networking service, Instagram released a statement to apologise through their Twitter account,
“Yesterday, our systems were incorrectly flagging content in support of #ENDSARS and marking posts as false. We are deeply sorry for this. The issue has now been resolved, and we apologise for letting our community down in such as time of need.”
