It’s amazing how a fashion style went from being one of the most dreaded styles some centuries ago to being a trending one this season. What style are we referring to? It’s the Polka Dots Style! Polka Dots are certainly making a huge comeback in the fashion scene and we’re totally loving it.
Polka Dot is a pattern consisting of an array of large filled circles of the same size. They are commonly seen on clothings, toys, furniture, ceramics and even on Eastern European folk art. Polka dots have been in existence since around the 15th century in Europe, although wearing them then was considered a taboo.

Back in those days, the machines used to create uniformly spaced polka dots were not yet in existence, as a result the dots produced on fabric were random and unevenly spaced. Unfortunately, in that era too, contagious diseases that leave unpleasant rashes on the body, such as small pox and leprosy were very rampant, so, seeing fabrics with those patterns reminded people of the diseases that had claimed many lIves. It was therefore considered an abomination to be seen wearing them.
Luck turned around for the Polka Dot style in the 18th century, when a polka dance swept through Europe. Many manufacturing companies started taking advantage of the trending polka dance to produce polka dots outfits and products. Entertainers and celebrities also patronised the Polka dot style at the time, resulting in an increase in it’s popularity.
