Fashion is not limited to women’s styles and choices alone, so today, our Fashion History column is bringing something for the men. Actors in the 1900s were known for their style and swag. Though old, their outfits can still impact modern fashion choices.

Let’s explore one of Jim Iyke’s old looks and explore modern alternatives.

In this look, Jim Iyke has on a yellow oversized suit and a black shirt. The charismatic actor matches his look with sunshades and you can already imagine him with a glass of wine in his hand. If you watch him closely, you can imagine his wide grin too — a spec.

Wearing a suit conveys a respectable image and can be dated back to the 18th century. Originally popular for official purposes and usually in the colours black and grey, the evolution of fashion has changed that narrative.

You can wear a suit to almost any social gathering if you wear it right. I say ‘almost’ because you can’t wear a suit for a swim or to the gym. Now, here are 5 ways you can rock your suit.

1. With a Collar.

You don’t have to wear a shirt to look official. In the image below, Timini Egbuson rocked a lapel-less grey two-piece suit in soft linen. This suit had a reworked grandad collar designed by Tinathan.

You can choose not to wear a conventional shirt and walk into any office and not look out of place in that outfit. If you choose to show up to a dinner like that, it is perfect too as that look is stylish, regal and relaxed.

2. With Sleeves

Fashion really has evolved. If someone had told the Brook brothers in the 18th century that a suit could be bright orange and worn with sleeves, they would have concluded that that person had lost it.

However, look at how chic Denola Grey looks in a bright orange suit with sleeves and a scarf around his waist. While it is obvious he has a suit on, the fun in this outfit can not be ignored.

You could finish this look with a pair of mules that shouldn’t be loud or extra as your outfit is already a statement.

3. With a Bandana

You could show up to a friend’s party or a dinner in a suit and white shirt matched with a bandana of your choice.

Whatever you colours you choose to combine, be deliberate about them.

The aim of looking like this is to appear stylish and comfortable without doing too much.

4. With a Kaftan

A suit and a kaftan in one look, evolution baby! Like Samiko here, you can rock a green suit with a kaftan.

Because this can be a rather interesting look, it is important that you are deliberate about the colours you put together. If you are considering hitting the red carpet or meeting the in-laws like this, you should wear subtle colours.

5. With a Tee

This is a very interesting and laid back look. Pairing a suit with a tee can give off the air of a deliberate, flawless and relaxed sense of style.

Because this isn’t a conventional look, be careful with the way you match your colours. Here’s a little secret, black pops when you wear it right.

Which look do you see yourself rocking? Do let us know in the comments section below.
