We understand if as a fashion designer, or a customer, one doesn’t properly grasp the true meaning of certain words. In the glossary of fashion words, words are abundant, such that it may be hard to keep up.

Some fashion terms tend to be misused often by fashion entrepreneurs because they don’t know the proper way to use them. Not to worry though, we’ve got you covered with our series.

Through this series we have discussed fashion terms such as asymmetrical designs, look books, contemporary fashion, and haute couture.

Now, what does it mean in fashion, when a style is said to be composite, or eclectic? How about silhouettes? What does the word mean and how should it be used?

Composite Style

A style is said to be composite if it is a combination of distinct styles, such as the combination of feminine and flirtatious styles of fashion.

Composite materials such as fibres which consist of multiple layers of designs, in the future, would be used to make designs. Researchers have taken a step further in the future of composite txtike design, as they designed a computerized fabric that can change shape and color in response to movement.

Eclectic Style

Eclectic style is the style choice for people, mostly women, who prefer creative and unconventional fashion choices and like to express that through their outfits.

There are different ways of showcasing an eclectic style whether by pairing different pieces of clothing, wearing different colors at the same time, or wearing the right accessories. One could also pair different styles of clothing to achieve an eclectic style, such as pairing elegant pieces with basic items.

Silhouettes

A silhouette is the image of a person, object or scene represented as a solid shape of a single color, which is usually black, with the edges matching the outline of the subject. In fashion, however, a silhouette can be used to refer to the line of a dress or the garment’s overall shape.

It is the outline of the clothing, which is used to emphasize the shape of a woman to create a flattering illusion.

The silhouette is an important aspect of fashion designing, as it affects the way designs are perceived. For example, a fashion sketch for illustration should include the basic silhouette of the garment, as well as the color combinations of the outfit and many more.

How To Use These Terms Properly

A style is said to be composite if one can identify two distinct looks or styles from the outfit.

One is said to have an eclectic style if they can pair clothes together that wouldn’t be paired by regular people, and still make a fashion statement.

As a fashion designer, saying, “The outfit is designed to give you a flattering silhouette“, means that the dress would give the person a flattering look and outline when it is worn.

These are some of the fashion terms that would really help fashion designers in this modern age. For other commonly misused fashion words, click here.
