The Heineken Lagos Fashion Week 2020 with the theme Woven Threads, has decided to launch a design contest for fashion designers. As a top fashion event in the African fashion scene, this event leads the way with initiatives that help to support and grow the African fashion industry. It also provides a platform to frame fashion as an important tool for creativity and commerce in Africa.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, the event was rebranded to be showcased digitally, hence becoming Africa’s First Digital Fashion Showcase. The theme was also changed to “Africa Shaping Fashion’s Future” in celebration of the show’s 10-year anniversary.

Employing the use of Zoom, and Instagram live, which gives speakers the chance to interact properly with their listeners, they have been able to successfully deliver webinars and talks, including a workshop on sustainable design with Mark Van Iterson, the Heineken Global Director of Design and Sustainability. Then, they launched the most prestigious design contest in Africa.

Requirements For The Heineken Lagos Fashion Week Design Competition

Following the theme which is “Africa Shaping Fashion’s Future”, designers are expected to put together a mood board and 3 sketches. A mood board is basically a type of visual representation, that could include designs or illustrations, colour palettes and so on,  to  convey a general idea about a style or concept. The sketches also have to show the future of fashion and sustainability, as Heineken meets fashion to design a greener world.

Designers are then expected to share their designs on Instagram with the official hashtag #HeinekenDesignContest in order for the organisers to take note of the designs.

What Do Designers Stand To Gain?

In addition to the international recognition this competition would bring to the finalists, the top three applicants stand a chance to be mentored by notable fashion designers in Africa. The winner would also get the privilege of showcasing at the Heineken Lagos Fashion Week in October, as well as invites, front-row tickets, backstage passes, to all Heineken Lagos Fashion Week pre-events and after parties.

This would give the designer a chance to socialize and connect with top fashion designers in the industry.

Applications for the competition closes on April 23, 2020. So, what are you waiting for? Apply now and stand a chance to win any of these!
