Natural hair and naturalistas seem to be everywhere you turn and more people transition to natural hair every single day.

The way people talk about natural hair can make you wonder, is my relaxed hair okay? Are there opportunities that I am missing out on? We decided to interview 5 people on their opinions and their thoughts about natural hair and how they take care of it. Here’s what they said;

1. It’s No Big Deal — Gospel Adeniji

Gospel Adeniji, an early childhood educator who has had both relaxed and natural hair shares her hair story

“Natural hair takes time and effort.”

Gospel ADENIJI.

I have always had relaxed hair, but I decided to start keeping natural hair in my 3rd year at the University. In the early months of keeping my hair natural, I enjoyed the feel of having to pour water on my head as often as I wanted to.

As time went by, I started having some difficulty combing my hair. I had to invest so much time and money into making it softer. I eventually went back to relaxing hair.

Natural hair takes time and effort, if you are planning to transition, research first and be ready to put in the effort. Have a hair routine and be patient with it. I didn’t research as I should have so I had to labour extra hard to maintain my natural hair.

What are the best practices to keep your hair healthy while transitioning or grooming?

Moisturise, wash your hair in sections, and have a hair routine.

2. Yes, You Should Be Proud Of It —Aanuwura

Aanuwura is an avid creative and videographer who is a naturalista. These are her thoughts.

“I know for a fact that natural hair is worth every hype it gets, at least if you don’t have issues with grooming it.”

aanuwura

I keep natural hair and I love it. Although it requires money to maintain, especially if your hair texture is not soft, that is, if have 4C hair like mine for example. But despite the stress, I still love it! It actually gives me confidence!

For the best practices to maintain your natural hair, I’ll share my tips with you.

  • I use shea butter a lot and make lots of protective styles each time I loosen it up to breathe.
  • I don’t overstretch it although my scalp isn’t tender, I treat my hair with care and don’t do just any kind of hairstyle.
  • I also apply oils, homemade oils, which are a combination of healthy natural oils to my hair. They have been a lifesaver.

3. It Requires Patience Than Hype —Rejoice Njoku

Rejoice, a communication and language artist says:

“Moisturise. Everything’s better when you moisturise.”

Rejoice

I think your natural hair journey is a journey that requires patience, especially if your hair growth rate is slow, like mine. But it’s definitely enjoyable. It’s also not as expensive as people make it appear.

4. It All Depends On How You Choose To See It — Eniola Obi

Eniola Obi, a hairstylist and naturalista herself says;

Well, many women have different views on this. Some women believe that it’s not worth it and they have their reasons and some go natural and love it.

What Do You Understand As Going Natural?

“Find your transitioning style.”

Going natural simply means that you are restoring your hair from the chemically altered texture to its original unaltered state. The chemicals applied to the hair alters the natural hair texture by straightening the curls.

What practices are required to maintain a healthy natural hair?

It is very important to detangle your hair only when it’s wet. Keep your scalp clean and deep condition often. Avoid exposing your hair to too much heat and protect your edges too.

5. It is Worth The Every Bit Of Hype —Toluwanimi Davies

Davies Toluwanimi, a student engineer and naturalista says;

“If you want to keep natural hair, research about it.”

Toluwanimi

Natural hair is worth the hype. Our hair type is different from other races and that alone makes it worth the hype. It’s a whole lot but this is what I’ll share now.

Going natural for me means accepting how your hair is and being ready to take care of it and make it look “fly”😇.

What Tips Has Helped You In Your Hair Journey?

Research. Talking with hair doctors. Joining groups and following people on social media that talk about hair. Having friends that do the same helps too. That way it’s been easy getting the best information.

My Thoughts

Well, most people agree that natural hair is worth the hype. As a naturalista myself, I must confess, I think it is. The joy and pride my afro gives me are unquantifiable. The smile I give when I get compliments for my hair is priceless. However, the pain I get when I don’t pay attention to my hair is a special kind of pain.

Do you think natural hair is worth the hype? Let us know in the comments!
