Women are powerful and can be and do anything they set their hearts to. Regardless of the obstacles that come their way, once given the right tools, women can break boundaries and shatter norms. Located in Lagos State, one of Nigeria’s versatile clothing brands, Dexy Creation, constantly shows this to the world.

Dexy Creation is a socially sustainable fashion brand dedicated to women empowerment through fashion, art, and skill training.

At the heart of the brand is a passion for women and making them grow and bloom to reach their full potentials in ways most never thought possible. To make this a reality, the brand donates 5% of the proceeds from sales of its ready-to-wear collections to women empowerment.

Headed by Creative Director, Adaeze Dexy Onu, Dexy Creation understands that it cannot do women’s empowerment in isolation. Therefore, it partners with other brands to achieve its goals. This is how the Unleash Project found them.

How Dexy Creation got selected for the Unleash Project

Funded by the British Council and organised in collaboration with The Assembly and Condé Nast College of Fashion & Design, the Unleash Project brings together brands that solve the fashion eco-system problems. Out of 30 brands, Dexy Creation was one of the 10 brands shortlisted for this project. Each of these brands focuses on one or more of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

As a socially sustainable brand, Dexy Creation is using fashion, art, and skill training to solve the fashion eco-system problem. Keeping its focus on 3 of the SDGs – equality, decent work and economic growth and reduced inequality, it strives to make this possible.

How the idea for a sustainable capsule collection came to be

For the Unleash Project, Dexy Creation created a capsule collection titled “She Blooms”, a fusion of the Nigerian and Italian cultures. With inspiration from the Yellow Trumpet and Lily, the national flowers of both countries, the collection is bold and vibrant. With it, it wishes to “show every woman that she has a voice, can stand financially independent and should be bold”.

Each piece in this collection is unique, feeding on the Unique Selling Point of originality that Dexy Creation stands for. This collection and all others tell the African heritage stories, stories rich in culture and fashion. To channel this better, every outfit in the collection is made from indigenous fabrics like aso-oke and adire.

Adaeze Dexy Onu, the founder of Dexy Creation gives a sneak peek into the inspiration behind the collection. She tells this story, “Standing in the garden is a little bud. The yellow trumpet was scared to open its petals and bloom.” She thought, “What if the world beats me down and makes me wither? What if the other flowers shout me down? Can’t I just stay covered up and never shine fully?”

But as she thinks this, she realises it is her purpose to shine and show the world what she’s made of. Equipped with all she needs – the sun to provide her nutrition, the rain to cool her down, and roots and branches holding her firmly, the little bud blooms.” Each look in the capsule collection tells the story of taking strength and blooming into life.

“I was looking for my mother’s garden but I found my own garden.”

How Dexy Creation uses Art to attain sustainable development goals

As a brand dedicated to solving the fashion ecosystem problems, Dexy Creation follows a strict zero-waste culture. Every remnant piece of items used in their collections is turned into art. This includes remnants of pattern paper and leftover fabric.

Every of this waste is turned into stunning pieces of accessories, art, and craft including ankara bags, bangles, earrings, hair bands, paper flowers, and so on.

Making women employable in the fashion industry with relevant skills training

With its skill training arm, Dexy Creation works to make every woman employable. The brand empowers them with the right skills as well as shows them how to stand on their feet and contribute to the economic growth of society. Knowledge is better when it is shared, and this clothing brand ardently passes across its zero-waste culture to the women it trains.

The brand aims to empower 1,000 women in the next 3 to 5 years. With more sponsors on board, Dexy Creations can make it possible for more women to get the skills they need at a more affordable rate.
