The fashion industry in Nigeria has indeed experienced immense growth as the demands for outfits, footwear, and fashion accessories made in Nigeria have now increased. Many fashion brands in Nigeria, like Imad Eduso, Wanni Fuga and many more, infuse the African culture and heritage in their designs to put out unique products.

Femi Handbags is a fashion accessories brand in Nigeria that has become increasingly popular over the years, not only because of their unique products, but also the impact they have on Nigerian communities at large. So, what is special about the typical product in the Femi Handbags brand? And how have they been able to make a difference over the years?

About Femi Handbags

Femi Handbags is a Nigerian fashion accessories brand that employs the use of vibrant coloured palettes and hand-loomed African fabrics like aso-oke to deliver highly detailed handbags. The handbags, which are produced in Oyo, Nigeria, are designed with a skilful mix of traditional crafting techniques and modern technology to give quality products.

“We have successfully combined modern and sophisticated design elements and silhouettes with an undeniably African touch by subtly weaving our culture into our products, through the use of traditional fabrics, accessories and hand-stitching techniques.” – Femi Olayebi

The eponymous fashion label is owned by Femi Olayebi, a French graduate, translator, and creative. She is also the founder of the Lagos Leather Fair and My World Of Bags, a sister company that boasts a stunning range of multi-function and ethnic-styled products.

Product Uniqueness

The Femi Handbags brand boasts a range of handbags, including shoulder bags, tote bags, mini bags, handheld bags, and many more. These bags are designed with great attention to detail and have quality craftsmanship at their core.

“Although we never attempted to re-invent the wheel, today we experiment a lot with bold colours and different textures.” -Femi Olayebi

The fact that the brand makes sure to use bright colours with an infusion of African prints and contemporary silhouettes makes the bags unique. Also, like the founder shared, each piece is handcrafted by artisans individually, and even though there are countless variations of the bag, each handbag from the brand is a limited edition.

How The Brand Is Making Impact

The Lagos Leather Fair is an initiative of the Femi Handbags brand which aims to create awareness and a platform for leather designers to showcase their products and talents. The Lagos Leather Fair brings together major stakeholders in the Nigerian leather value chain to promote the industry.

They organise training and talks for emerging and upcoming leather products entrepreneurs to grow and establish their businesses. In a leather bag training conducted last year, the Lagos Leather Fair, in collaboration with the Oyo State Government and the Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC), impacted about 150 participants with immense knowledge.

The Femi Handbags brand is one that is indeed changing the narrative of the Nigerian leather industry by empowering emerging entrepreneurs to grow and showcasing the African culture and heritage through their products.
