As the fashion industry becomes more conscious of its environmental impact, many fashion brands are looking for ways to be more sustainable in their practices. After all, if we don’t have a safe earth to live in, no fashion brand will exist.
At the forefront of the sustainable fashion movement in Nigeria is NKWO.
NKWO is a fashion brand dedicated to the preservation of traditional African crafts while curbing the damaging effects of textile waste on the environment. Recently, they released a collection for both men and women, here’s our review of it.

About the Collection
To a great extent, our traditional fabrics and clothing have been replaced with cheaper mass-products materials, taking away from the beauty of our traditions. This collection was made to preserve our traditional crafts by working with artisans and local makers.
It is the second series of hand-dyed pieces which NKWO introduced to their Essentials range a couple of years ago. It is a collection that was made with both men and women in mind.
The collection contains tops, trousers, dresses, and jackets that can be worn individually, with other pieces or paired together. It also features versatile pieces, like the parachute top that can be worn backwards or forwards, alone or with trousers by both men and women, uniquely creative pieces, and simple pieces.

Execution
For the collection, the creative director of the brand, Nkwo Onwuka partnered with an artisan from the northern part of Nigeria to hand-dye the pieces. Made using their customised Dakala fabric – created using a modern strip weaving technique – and upcycled denim and cotton, the collection is super stylish.
The collection was made using mostly indigo dyed fabric but contains other pieces in white and orange. It also contains denim pieces that give a new perspective on how the versatile fabric can be used.
Target Audience
This collection is targeted at modern-day men and women who has nothing but love for our traditional fabrics. It is suitable for both casual and formal event as it contains pieces that can fit into either effortlessly.
With pieces that feature ruffles, gathers, cut-outs, and patchwork details, the collection beckons to those who like to be a bit ‘extra’ in their dressing without going all the way.

One thing we love about this collection is how it contains various pieces for a range of occasions. We also love the versatility of the pieces in the collection and their creativity with the patchwork design, dubbed ‘Dakala patch’. We think this collection was a hit.
