Africa is a continent that is filled with creatives doing beautiful and amazing things. From fashion designers to content creators, many have used their platforms for great causes. 

One of such causes is the body positive movement. A movement that was started as a way to protect fat people and provide a community where they are accepted for who they are. 

Here are 5 African fashion content creators going against stereotypes and championing the body positive movement.

Latasha Ngwugbe is the founder of About That Curvy Life (ATCL). Popularly known as Latasha Lagos, she is ‘a girl with a dream to inspire people around her, one body at a time, to be anything and everything’. 

One who is a firm believer in equality and body positivity, she is a fashion editor and the founder of Curvy Monroe. Curvy Monroe is a fashion brand that caters to plus-size women and is knows for celebrating curvy people and encouraging them to live their best lives now.

Through her content on ATCL, Latasha Ngwugbe has been able to create a safe space for plus-sized women and men. The platform inspires and supports people who do not ‘fall under the construct the society has set for them in terms of standards of looks and size’.

With her work, she encourages people who do not fall under fashion rules of the right kind of body to go out and be the best version of themselves that they can be. The platform helps people find each other and creates a form of community where everyone is safe and supported by others. 

2. Nyawira Mumenya

Nyawira Mumenya is a Kenyan plus-sized fashion blogger and content creator championing the body positivity movement. 

Through her blog, Miss Nyawi, and social media, Mumenya shows plus-sized women what true style is and guides them on how to style their curves. With her versatile fashion sense, she debunks myths people have about curvy people. 

She shows that regardless of body size or shape, a plus-sized woman can still make heads turn.

Lois is a Nigerian fashion blogger and model set to break the mould on how women’s bodies are perceived. The founder of CustomNaija and one who is no stranger to being mocked and having her body over-sexualised, Lois aims to teach women self-love. 

Through her fashion blogging, brand and art, Lois works to make women see themselves as Queens. By creating content to foster body positivity, she hopes to inspire plus-sized women to inspire others as well to accept themselves.

The body positivity movement is one that should be fought for by everyone in the fashion industry. No one should be pushed into a corner or made to feel less of a person just because of how they look.  ​
