TikTok Holds Its Fashion Month
As fashion weeks go on both physically and virtually, TikTok has decided to host its fashion month.
The short video company, this week, kicked off a lineup of virtual runways and influencer-led sessions that will run all through to October 8.
“We’ve seen the fashion industry reinvent what luxury fashion means to culture and society through TikTok by bringing fashion into the homes of our community during quarantine,” CeCe Vu, TikTok’s fashion content partnerships lead, said in a statement to WWD.
All through the month, the platform will feature a mix of content. Saint Laurent will offer a runway show, while JW Anderson will reveal its latest collection, and along the way, viewers can tune in for styling sessions hosted by popular creators like Wisdom Kaye and Ariam.
The event will be hosted by TikTok creator Nick Tangorra and feature Puma and Alice + Olivia.
“The whole thing is really designed to take users and creators to another place,” Tangorra told WWD. “You think about this quarantine, and COVID-19 really kind of left all of us staying put. What this is designed to do is take viewers on a journey to a place that really doesn’t even exist, this Odyssey.”
Throughout the event, attendees can expect to see other TikTok influencers hitting the virtual runway and will be the first to shop exclusive capsule collections.
A performance-filled, online after-party will round things out. TikTok has set aside the hashtag #TikTokFashionMonth: “Pull out your best looks, get ready to walk the runway, and join us for #TikTokFashionMonth.”

On October 10th, Kerby Jean-Raymond and Kering – the French luxury conglomerate behind Gucci, Saint Laurent, Bottega Veneta, Balenciaga, and Alexander McQueen – announced a new platform, ‘Your Friends in New York’, “designed to empower the next generation of innovators.”
The idea started when Jean-Raymond and Kering CEO François-Henri Pinault met in 2019 but was delayed in its launch because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Now it is official. The platform is a creative ecosystem that will merge music, art, philanthropy, wellness, and of course, fashion.
“When I met Kerby in 2019, I was impressed by his unique perspective of creativity, innovation, business, and social issues. What struck me immediately was his willingness to invent a new, singular model, freeing himself from the usual constraints of the fashion system. It was only natural for Kering to support this project that seeks to empower new artistic talents, to encourage the diversity of creativity, and to give a voice to the younger generation of innovators,” said Pinault.
Pyer Moss aims to “involve the community at large” and “continue to help others grow in the fashion and art space.” The platform will have multiple branches: One will produce live events and experiences, another will serve as an incubator for new talents, a third will support philanthropic work, and the final branch will create merchandise to promote YFINY.
“It is important to me to create and work on ventures that are future-forward, involve the community at large, and that will continue to help others grow in the fashion and art space,” said Jean-Raymond in a release.
Additional details on each program will be made public in the coming months. As Jean-Raymond says in his Instagram post, “See you in the new world.”
Louis Vuitton Releases Face Shields
As face masks and face shields become a part of our everyday lives, more and more fashion houses are reimagining the look of these essential items. This week, Louis Vuitton announced that it will be releasing its high-fashion face shields.
The French fashion house, on October 30, will be launching its LV Shield, a protective visor, in all of its stores worldwide. The LV Shields include an elasticated, monogrammed strap that fits around the head, and is finished with details such as golden studs that are engraved with the label’s logo.
The shield is also trimmed with the brands signature monogram print and is light-sensitive: The visor transitions from clear to dark depending on sunlight conditions. It also works double-duty, as it can also be flipped upwards to be worn as a peaked cap.
Lizzo, Jonathan Anderson, Sarah Burton, and More Will Join Vogue’s Virtual Forces Of Fashion Summit
Vogue’s Forces of Fashion annual summit is going virtual this year.
The event in which designers and creatives discuss the industry’s current state and future will be held virtually on November 16 and 17 via a dedicated Forces of Fashion website.
The conference is set to feature a lineup of speakers that includes award-winning musician Lizzo, founder and creative director of JW Anderson and creative director of Loewe Jonathan Anderson, photographer Ethan James Green, and Alexander McQueen creative director Sarah Burton. They will be joined by Virgil Abloh of Off-White and Louis Vuitton Men, AZ Fashion’s Alber Elbaz, and Bottega Veneta’s creative director, Daniel Lee.
The discussions will revolve around fashion’s role in supporting and championing sustainability, ethical practices, and social responsibility. Vogue will partner with local schools and youth outreach programs in New York to showcase selected works from young photographers. Attendees at the event will be allowed to bid on those works and all proceeds will go directly to the artists.
“In these uncertain times, all of us at Vogue are looking to the inspiring and creative ways in which the fashion community has been responding and coming together,” says Vogue editor in chief Anna Wintour. “While we, unfortunately, cannot gather in person, this year’s Forces of Fashion will nonetheless continue to bring together the most exciting talents across the industry.”

Fashion Retailer Century 21 Files For Bankruptcy
Fashion retailer Century 21 filed for bankruptcy on September 10 and said it will shut down all its stores for good, blaming insurance companies that failed to pay up during the pandemic.
Known for deeply discounted designer goods, Century 21 has been a retail anchor for decades in lower Manhattan. The retailer said its 13 stores in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Florida will begin holding going out of business sales. The bankruptcy file is coming despite pre-COVID plans to open three new stores, including a “premier” location at the American Dream Mall in New Jersey, according to a filing.
“While insurance money helped us to rebuild after suffering the devastating impact of 9/11, we now have no viable alternative but to begin the closure of our beloved family business,” co-CEO Raymond Gindi said in a statement. “Century 21 is being forced to shutter because our insurers, to whom we have paid significant premiums every year for protection against unforeseen circumstances like we are experiencing today, have turned their backs on us at this most critical time,” he added.
Century 21 cited $175 million that was never paid out by its insurance companies as tipping the scales for them. The company listed assets and liabilities of $500 million in its bankruptcy petition.
“We are confident that had we received any meaningful portion of the insurance proceeds, we would have been able to save thousands of jobs and weather the storm, in hopes of another incredible recovery,” Gindi wrote.
