This week in fashion has been a pretty exciting one, from a Nigerian-British designer being chosen by Kanye West as the Design Director of his Yeezy-Gap collaboration to some news on fashion tech, here is a rundown of global fashion news.

Nigerian Fashion Designer, Mowalola Ogunlesi, Is The Design Director For Kanye West’s Yeezy-Gap Collaboration

Kanye West has appointed Nigerian-British fashion designer, Mowalola Ogunlesi, as the Design Director of his Yeezy-Gap collaboration.

Shortly after Kanye West announced this collaboration on twitter with the hashtag #WESTDAYEVER Mowalola posted on her Instagram that she is the Design Director of the initiative.

Mowalola is a third-generation fashion designer in her family line as her Scottish grandmother, Elizabeth Okuboyejo, founded Betti-O, a popular fashion brand that uses adire to design clothing items in Nigeria. Her father, Adegbola Ogunlesi is the co-founder of a men’s fashion label, Sofisticat, and her mother, Adenike Ogunlesi, founded Ruff ‘n’ Tumble, a popular children’s clothing line in Nigeria.

Mowalola has styled celebrities like Kim Kardashian, Kanye West, Drake, and Naomi Campbell. She showcased her debut collection in 2019 at the London Fashion Week and was one of the designers chosen by British Vogue to style the Barbie doll on her 60th anniversary.

Industrie Africa Launches Online Platform To Shop African Fashion Internationally

Industrie Africa, which was launched a little over two years ago by Nisha Kanabar and Georgia Bobley, have created a shoppable online platform to take African fashion to the doorstep of their audience worldwide.

The platform, which is an online showroom, highlights the best of Africa fashion with a directory of over 80 fashion brands from 24 African countries. It is a platform that allows fashion lovers from around different parts of Africa to see the latest in fashion Africa. It also gives African designers a platform to boost their presence in the global fashion scene.

Designers such as Thebe Magugu, Kenneth Ize, Adebayo Oke-Lawal, and Lisa Folawiyo have their designs showcased on the platform for shoppers. The site also has pieces from up and coming fashion designers.

Tech Startup Founded By Physicist Is Europe’s Largest Ethical Clothing Platform

A tech startup that was founded by a group of Physicists has just become Europe’s largest marketplace for ethical fashion.

Project Cece recently added its 100th partner making it the biggest online platform for sustainable clothes in Europe. Project Cece, which stands for Project Conscious Clothing, is a search engine for eco-friendly, ethical, and responsible fashion that practices fair trade.

The platform which was founded by three physicists, Sisters Marcella and Melissa Wijngaarden and their friend Noor Veenhover is now home to over 200 brands and contains over 10,000 sustainable clothing items.

The site was founded based on the fact that the three co-founders found it hard to get sustainable clothing they liked when they went shopping. With their joint knowledge in programming, they were able to build the platform to bring multiple sustainable fashion brands under one umbrella.

Polimoda Publishes ‘The Truth About Fashion’

Polimoda, the renowned fashion school in Florence, Italy, has published ‘The Truth About Fashion’, a collaborative and educational project designed to create space for student voices and help the world understand fashion beyond stereotypes and the simplification of the media.

The project was embarked on to delve into what both Millennials and Generation Z think about fashion and was carried out exclusively on Polimoda students. A research was carried out by student teams to discover the main values, references, and questions that are significant for the younger generation to understand the future of fashion.

From it, an online survey that was completed in one month was sent to all Polimoda students. The research found that most students believe authenticity is the most important aspect of the fashion industry and that many of them are swaying towards newer brands as opposed to big brands.

Launchmetrics, the data research and insights company for fashion, luxury, and beauty, has been chosen by the Federation de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM) to digitise its virtual Haute Couture Week and Paris Fashion Week Men’s. Both fashion weeks will hold back-to-back from July 6th to July 13th, 2020.

The platform will give access to the general public to watch viral videos, interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, and commentary from brands, organisations, media, and so on.
