Happy New Year, Fashion Lovers! 🥳🥳

Last year was one tough year but we are here, in 2021, standing strong and ready to forge on. As Nigerians, we are people that are known for our love for fashion, having a good time and partying. Even though half of the year 2020 was spent in lockdown, Nigerians still found a way of making styles trend.

From the limited owambe moments we had last year, here are the top 10 styles fashionistas rocked.

Top 10 Owambe Styles of 2020

1. Corset Style

Corsets have been around for centuries but the year 2020 brought them back with a bang! Last year saw fashionistas infusing corsets into everything from long dresses to jumpsuits.

The corset style automatically gives a woman that elegant and composed look, highlighting and enhancing her shape to give her a very feminine allure.

2. Bishop Sleeves

Last year paid a lot of attention to sleeves and bishop sleeves were the queen of them all. Bishop sleeves are extremely elegant and dramatic and can give any party outfit the perfect facelift.

Whether styled on ankara or lace fabric, bishop sleeves are an attention grabber and 2020 saw many-a-fashion enthusiasts rocking it in all sorts of ways.

3. Waist Train

This unconventional style that puts a train at the side of an outfit ruled the owambe scene in more ways than one. Ladies rocked this style in various fabrics and, with a combination of other styles, this style turned heads.

The waist train style is not only chic but is also classy with a touch of playfulness that appeals to most women.

4. Cut-Outs

Cut-outs, the trendy style where pieces of fabric are removed from an area of an outfit to give it a different look, rocked the fashion scene in 2020. People used cut-outs in varying parts of their outfits, from the neckline to the waist and legs, this style showed up at many parties.

5. Tiered Sleeves

Who wants a plain old sleeve when you can have a tiered sleeve? Tiered sleeves were all over the place in 2020 with fashion lovers rocking them in two or three tiers mainly.

The style turned many simple dresses to head-turning works of art that got people loving it. In 2020, tiered sleeves were definitely the way to go.

6.  Cold-Shoulder

These fun sleeves allow women to show off some skin while still being modest, and fashionistas were all for it in 2020. Neither overly revealing not overly conservative, the cut-out style gave women the freedom they needed without being too constricting.

7. Ruching

Ruching came back most beautifully in 2020. Every outfit, from form-fitting ones to loose-fitting ones, rocked this style in style.

Owing to the way the layers of the ruches accentuates the female silhouette in an alluring way, fashionistas just couldn’t get enough of it.

8. Off-One Shoulder

In between the off-shoulder and the full sleeve styles, the off-one shoulder trend caught on like fire in 2020 with fashion lovers rocking it all over. Depending on the effect they hoped to achieve, people rocked it with long sleeves, short sleeves, bishop sleeves, and so on.

This trend was truly a show stopper in 2020 and we were all for it.

9. Ruffles

Ruffles are a fun and classy addition to any outfit and this year saw ruffles in abundance. Whether created with lace, organza, tulle or any other fabric, ruffles were definitely on the owambe scene in 2020.

Fashionistas rocked them to parties, weddings, red carpet events, and other events in very stylish ways.

10. High Slit

This list will not be complete without the high slit style on it. Last year saw fashionistas rock this trend in so many beautiful ways. Whether in front or at the side, this extra sexy style shows off the legs in the most flattering way.

With the start of 2021 and more owambes to attend, more styles are sure to trend while some fade away. Let’s see what this year has in store for us!
