Usually in the fashion industry, certain words or terminologies are not used properly by designers, creative directors, footwear makers and many other fashion entrepreneurs. Whether it’s by learning about new processes or terms that are now being used currently in the industry, fashion entrepreneurs need to stay on top of their games.
Just last week, we shared how gathers, asymmetrical hems and fluted hems can be used to design a range of outfits. Christiana Rotimi-Williams of CRW Style also told us how gathers can go with everything including hems, sleeves and necklines, and you can check here to read all about it.
This Commonly Misused Fashion Words column is designed to correct the wrong notion fashion entrepreneurs have of certain words, processes and terminologies in the fashion industry. So what do these words – V-neckline, Sweetheart Neckline, Tafetta – mean in the fashion industry?
V-Neckline
A V-neckline is one of the most popular of all necklines used in fashion designing and they are formed by two diagonal lines from the shoulders that meet on the chest, thereby creating a V-shape. Usually, the depth of this V-neckline may vary, ranging from demure styles to plunging ones.
V-necklines are also one of the most flattering necklines in history, as they tend to make the face slimmer and elongate the wearers body.
Sweetheart Neckline
Sweetheart neckline is another form of neckline used in fashion designing that has a curved bottom edge that is concave down and usually doubly scalloped in order to resemble the top half of a heart. Sweetheart necklines like the creative director and founder of Oma’s Apparel shared with us are mostly used for beautification because of the illusion of curvy chest that it adds to the body.
One thing that makes the sweetheart neckline standout is the fact that it is a combination of features of other popular necklines.
What do we mean?
For the sweetheart neckline, the dip in the middle makes it resemble a V-neckline, while the width and scope is like that of a square neckline.
Tafetta
Tafetta is one of the common fabrics used in fashion designing, mostly women’s fashion, and it is a crisp, smooth, plain woven fabric made from silk. It is said to be the ultimate fabric for special occasions, as it can be used to design mostly ball dresses and evening wears.
Tafetta, due to its stiffness, can create a beautiful structural silhouette and it also doesn’t lose its shape overtime. This has made it one of the go-to fabrics, especially considering it’s smooth surface and luxurious shine.
How They Are Used
The V-neckline is now one of the most popular necklines for women of all body types, and can be used to design various outfits for all sorts of occasions. And like the creative director of Oma’s Apparel shared with us,
“V-necklines are mostly used for evening dresses.”
The sweetheart neckline is actually more feminine than the regular V-neckline, even in it’s simplest state. And just like the founder of Oma’s Apparel shared as well, sweetheart necklines are mostly used for bridal dresses.
Due to the unique characteristics of the tafetta fabric, they can be used for a variety of outfits, with unique ones that definitely make a statement.
“Fashion designers can design monostrap gowns, and even flared skirts with the tafetta fabric.”
