Creativity is at the core of fashion design. Every fashion entrepreneur has a fountain of creativity in them waiting to overflow and come alive. But even with this, sometimes, creative blocks happen. These blocks can hinder your entire creative process and leave you stuck with redundant styles and unable to come up with new collections.
As serious and discouraging as creative blocks can be, there are ways to get past them and get your creativity back into full swing. Come with us as we show you 6 ways to stimulate your creativity and push your fashion business to the next level.
1. Take a Break
Sometimes, the constant grinding of work takes a toll on the mind and hinders creativity. Whether you are a full-time fashion entrepreneur or one juggling fashion entrepreneurship with a 9-5, there is always something to do. But, if you ceaselessly keep your mind on work and what you have to do, you will eventually burn out and have no creative ideas.
As a fashion entrepreneur, you need to learn to take breaks. No matter how important that collection is or how urgent your clients’ orders are you won’t be able to do anything if no ideas come to you. Learn to take breaks. These breaks could be as little as taking a few minutes off that design process every hour. In these times, rest relax, and recharge and watch your creativity come back to life.
Sometimes, however, you may find the solution to your creative blocks by taking an extended period off work. Take it as an entrepreneurial leave. Use that time to be quiet and enjoy the everyday beauties of life. Your brain might just need a little break to get those creative juices running again.
2. Change Your Environment
Sometimes, physically changing your work environment can spur creativity within you. Staying in the same workspace every day without a change of scenery can make you way too comfortable and cause a creative block in your mind. It is, therefore, important to change your environment every once in a while.
You could purposely get up and move to a different environment to get inspiration for your next collection and spur your mind on to be creative again. This could look something like taking a trip to a location that could stimulate your senses, like a park or art gallery. It could also mean going for a long walk to get some fresh air and let your mind wander. You could also just do some work in a place you’ve never been before.
All of these different environments could birth in you the inspiration you need for your next collection and kick that creative block out.
3. Brainstorm Ideas
Sometimes, there is nothing like a brainstorming session to get your creativity back in full swing. When you have a tight deadline and your creativity is low, a good brainstorming session might just be what you need. For this, call together members of your team – even those not on the design team – and brainstorm on fresh ideas. The different views you get from everyone might just come together to be the breakthrough you need for creativity.
If you are a new entrepreneur who has no team yet, or if you aren’t yet satisfied with the brainstorming session you had with your team, you can brainstorm with others. Consult with someone whose mind works differently from you but who understands your company goal. By doing this, you will most likely come up with new ideas you never would have thought of alone.
Another way to brainstorm is to try visual brainstorming. As a fashion entrepreneur, you are most likely a visual thinker. Sit by yourself in a quiet place and allow yourself to daydream and come up with all sorts of ideas. This way, you just might jumpstart your creative motor.
4. Gather New Ideas
Ideas are everywhere, we just need to search them out. As a fashion entrepreneur, you always have to be on the lookout for new ideas for your designs and collections. Read about other fashion entrepreneurs and what they are doing. Take an interest in news and trends in the fashion industry. All of these can spur up new ideas within you.
You can also watch stimulating videos on YouTube, listen to music and podcast or read about other inspiring, creative people. Also, you can check up styles and designs on Pinterest to get inspiration. All these can spring up ideas in you that will touch your creative side.
Another great idea here is to network and exchange ideas with other fashion entrepreneurs or creatives. From all the ideas you throw around, your creativity will catch back on fire.
5. Pick Up Journaling
There’s something about writing down your thoughts that can eliminate a creative block. Always have a notebook with you where you can write down everything that comes to you daily. You never know when or where you will get a business idea.
As you go through each day and have various experiences, journal the ideas that came to you, problems you faced, and any other thing of interest during the day. As you do this, your ideas and thoughts can morph into something great that sets the ground for your creativity to come alive. It could be a flower or a little child on the streets that informs the basis of your new collection.
You can also use your journal to doodle and draw ideas. They don’t have to be perfect, but something in your doodles might be the break your creativity needs. So, in your everyday life, learn to journal.
6. Solve Problems Differently
Innovation and creativity work hand-in-hand. You can never be truly innovative or creative if you solve the problems in your niche the same way your competitors are solving them. In your search for creativity, always look beyond the traditional way of doing things and think out of the box.
Do not fear failure but attack your problems from a different angle. Let your mind run free and venture into new adventurous things you never have before. Challenge the norms in fashion and then think of ways to change them. As you do this, your creativity will definitely be spurred on.
Having creative blocks is normal for fashion entrepreneurs, but you should never let them hold you down. As you try out various of these steps, note which ones work for you and which you had to made minor adjustments to so you can handle your next creative block like the boss that you are.
